Prestwick Airport along the A79 for around 2 miles – turn left for Troon along
the B749 – go straight ahead into Troon over the railway
bridge and you can see the course on your left from there). |
Founded in 1878, Troon
Golf Club soon outgrew its purely local reputation. The course
today presents a stern golfing examination and in particular
the inward half of Royal Troon is widely accepted as the most
demanding of all courses on The Open Championship rota.
With the wind to contend with along with deep rough interspersed with gorse and
broom, accurate shot making is essential.
The signature hole is the 8th known as ‘’Postage Stamp’’.
Although it is the shortest hole in Open Championship golf, don’t be misled
because it is one of the most treacherous especially during inclement weather.
The ultimate test in Scottish links golf. |

Long regarded as one of the finest courses in the
world the Ailsa came to international prominence with the famous
duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson in the 1977 Open. The
crowd in brilliant sunny weather were treated to an exhilarating
display of world-class golf.
The scenic glories of the Ailsa course are to be savoured – the granite
dome of Ailsa Craig and beyond to the tip of Argyle.
Colin Montgomerie was once quoted as saying that ‘the Ailsa is the finest
links golf course in the world’ and few would disagree.
Ailsa is soon to host The Open in 2009 so come and try for yourself what real
championship golf is all about. |
