| (Travel south from Glasgow Prestwick
Airport – along the A79 into Prestwick Main Street–turn
right at traffic lights into Links Road – under railway
bridge, which sits next to the railway station and the golf
course can be seen on the right hand side). |
Birthplace of The Open Championship that was
first played in 1860 it was organised by the members a mere
nine years after the club was founded.
Here you will be walking in the footsteps of legends.
Take time out to study the stone cairn close to the putting green which is the
site of the original first tee and also imagine all those years ago a young Tom
Morris, perhaps the first superstar of golf, facing the daunting challenge of
the monster first hole of 578 yards. Try to ponder over how he managed to use
hickory shaft clubs and a gutty ball and holed out in three shots.
Be prepared to soak up the history and enjoy a devilish test of golf especially
if the westerly wind strengthens or the rain makes an appearance |

and along the A78 – come
off at the Newhouse Interchange south of Irvine – take
the first exit and go straight on at the next roundabout (almost
immediate) signposted Harbourside and Golf Courses – Western
Gailes is situated first left on Marine Drive just past the
Gailes Restaurant). |
Founded in 1879, situated
around four miles north of Glasgow Prestwick Airport and
recognised as one of the finest and true links courses in
Scotland.
Previously played host to fine tournaments such as the Curtis Cup, PGA Championship
and the Scottish Amateur.
Western Gailes is used as a final Open Qualifying venue and will be for The Open
at Turnberry in 2009.
It possesses wonderful views across towards the Isle of Arran and to the sharp
outline of Ailsa Craig, which stands alone in the shimmering waters.
Always an excellent test of golf where any change in the strength or direction
of the wind provides new challenges, which are compounded by undulating terrain
and finely contoured greens.
A links golf delight in true championship mould.
Go for it! |
