Darley Golf Course lies within the town of Troon alongside its sister course Lochgreen.
It is slightly shorter than Lochgreen but is certainly tighter with unforgiving heather and gorse hugging both sides of many of the fairways.
A relatively benign opening only serves to accentuate the challenges ahead.
A very demanding course which requires the straightest of tee shots and continual concentration.
A true but very enjoyable test of links golf, which should be approached with care.
Excellent value for money at a fraction of the cost of the more aristocratic neighbour Royal Troon.

(Turn off the A77 at Whitletts roundabout – along Whitletts Road (A79) into Ayr–left into Mainholm Road - along Westwood Avenue – then left into golf course).
Dalmilling Golf Course situated within the main town of Ayr is perhaps a less obvious choice for playing but still provided a stiff challenge.
An 18-hole open and honest parkland course, which is situated near to the famous Ayr Racecourse which plays host to the Scottish Grand National and the Ayr Gold Cup.
A thoroughly enjoyable course it sweeps away from the clubhouse and dips into a rolling valley.
The River Ayr borders the southern end of the course and some of its tributary burns add character to the early holes.
The setting creates a lovely feel and has to be experienced to be enjoyed

(Head south along the A77 towards Girvan – turn right 400 yards before Bridgemill Roundabout which is just north of Girvan – along Golf Course Road then turn right down to the Starters Office).
Just along the road from its more illustrious neighbour Turnberry it shares the same stunning views across the Firth of Clyde to Ailsa Craig.
Originally designed by James Braid it has undergone a few changes since its inception in 1902.
Girvan Golf Course provides a test of considerable charm and aesthetic pleasure.
A mixture of links and parkland golf the first 8 holes are typical Scottish links followed by 10 holes inland with the added beauty of the winding River Girvan giving a variable challenge.
It features some taxing and long Par 3’s exacerbated by the prevailing SW wind.
A good short game is essential if you wish to conquer this course.

(Two miles south of Ayr town centre on the A719 Ayr to Dunure coast road).
Situated within Belleisle Estate, Seafield Golf Course has been restyled and developed in recent years.
Sometimes overlooked and slightly in the shadow of its big sister Belleisle Golf Course this classic combination of links and parkland golf will test the skills and talents of many an experienced campaigner.
It boasts some hazardous and testing greens along with some precarious sand traps, which can result in scorecard horror stories.
Accuracy from the tee is essential if you wish to avoid playing over greenside bunkers.
Why not give it a try and test your wits against the challenge but watch out in case it bites back
.
